Top of the World Highway

We made it to Alaska today (Sunday)!  Friday evening we stayed at Moose Creek PP campground somewhere south of Dawson City, met some really nice travelers, and shared a campfire.  Saturday we traveled to Dawson City, Yukon, toured around, then took the free ferry to the Top of the World Highway.  It was a very rough road, potholes, gravel, non-existent shoulders, and beautiful scenery.  We decided to travel on to the US/Canada border station, which has housing for the 3 border patrol agents and nothing else.  It took about 2 minutes to get through, and the agents were very friendly.  We drove about 45 minutes (30 miles) to Taylor Creek BLM campground--another beautiful spot.  (I can't think of other adjectives to use--beautiful, stunning, magnificent--the scenery is all of those and more.)  We had a rain shower shortly after arriving and were gifted with a double rainbow!  There were several working gold mines around, and I'm pretty sure the pot of gold was close by!

We got up this morning and continued on to the Taylor Highway/Alaska Highway 5, a road that was probably worse than the Top of the World Highway!  I kept having that "creepy, queasy feeling" (sing along with me...you know it's going through your head now--lol).   We got to Chicken, a little town that boasts 7 year-round residents & 23 in the summer.  We looked in the 2 shops, visited with a local, and continued down the road to Tok where we stopped for the night.  I did some laundry, Randy is doing a little camper maintenance, and we washed the filthy truck/camper.

Tomorrow we'll be on the road towards Valdez.  Stay tuned!

I was hoping for one of the walking tour historians to be standing on the porch reciting "The Cremation of Sam McGee," but it wasn't open yet for the season.

Annie sometimes gets in the front seat when we've stopped.  She's good about hopping back to her spot when we get in...usually.  Sometimes it takes a treat. :-)
